Mountain Skills Course – 2nd May Bank Holiday Weekend 24th, 25th and 26th May
There’s quite a lot to
cram into a weekend Mountain Skills Course, so we at Peak Navigation Courses
are seizing the opportunity to spread the course over three days and ensure
that course participants get the most from the course.
Scrambling in Langdale |
Learning Navigation |
Based in Keswick, The
Lake District, we have planned the following:
Saturday
The course starts at
10.00am with introductions and a indoor session about navigation. We then go
out for a walk where we put our navigation skills into practice, identifying
“contour” features, walking on a compass bearing and learn a bit about pacing
and timing. We’ll move onto some steeper ground and look at techniques for safe
movement on steep ground and easy scrambling.
Mid afternoon we
return to Keswick and have a session in a local equipment shop discussing and
comparing different makes, models, etc. followed by tea and cake!
We then return for a
final session looking at equipment to carry, weather and planning our route for
Sunday. Finish approx. 6pm.
We’ll meet in
Braithwaite at 9:30 and walk the Coledale Horseshoe a walk of about 14 Km with
a height gain of 1250m. All course
participants will be involved in the route finding and navigation. During the
day we will talk about the mountain environment, assessing risk and getting
help should things go wrong.
At the end of the walk
we’ll hold a short de-brief on the days adventure, questions and answers. We’ll
then plan our route for Monday. Finishing around 4.30pm.
Monday
We’ll meet in Threkeld
at 9:30 and make a circuit on Blencathra, ascending Hall’s Fell Ridge.
A short de-brief and
the course will end around 3pm.
Peak Navigation Courses have been accredited by Mountain Training to run both Hill Skills and Mountain Skills courses.
